The People’s Victory
Donald Trump’s Unconventional Convention
We will no longer surrender this country, or its people, to the false song of globalism.
—Donald Trump
The globalists might not have seen it coming, but the populists did.
On June 23, 2016, the news from the United Kingdom sent shock waves through world governments. By voting to exit the European Union (EU), the British people reclaimed control of their destiny from a horde of foreign elites who had ruled them for decades. Unelected bureaucrats in Brussels were indifferent, and even hostile, to the desires of the British people. The EU imposed costly regulations and taxes on the UK that stifled economic freedom. EU indirect taxation cost the UK an average of between $11 billion and $14 billion a year. And the costliest 100 EU regulations set the UK back $49 billion, which as Forbes notes, “exceeds what the UK Treasury collects in Council tax (a tax on domestic property) on an annual basis.”1 The EU open borders immigration policies also lowered British workers’ wages and opportunities while placing the UK’s sovereignty and self-determination in peril. While Britain still had its Parliament and elections—the trappings of democratic governance—the real power had increasingly been ceded to an unaccountable Eurozone establishment with globalist ambitions.
It took the visionary UKIP leader Nigel Farage to build the populist Brexit movement, defying impossible odds and reshaping the contours of global politics. When I had first introduced my radio listeners to Farage years earlier, some probably wondered why his views were relevant here. Farage was a chain-smoking, joke-cracking warrior for working-class Brits. He was fearless and his views resonated with me. He properly diagnosed what ailed his country—and mine. As early as 2014, I tweeted out a photo of Nigel and me along with the words “We need a Nigel Farage!”2
It was only a matter of time before the British rose up against the EU globalists who had stripped them of their sovereignty through mass immigration, destroyed their wages, and disrupted communities—all while being labeled bigots by those who fancy themselves their betters in the media for grumbling about it. Defying expectations and the polls, for once, everyday working people had taken a stand against the elites and finally said, “Enough.” I watched the Brexit victory live and it felt like election night here in the United States. I was ecstatic. If they could have a populist movement succeed, why can’t we? I asked myself.
“Taking on the establishment and challenging consensus is certainly a rough old game,” Farage said after the Brexit vote. “We heard the threats, we heard the ridiculous scare stories about world wars and apocalyptic visions, but the British people stood tall and refused to be bullied and threatened by the political class who have let so many in our country down so badly.”3 He later added, “This is a victory for ordinary people, for good people, for decent people. . . . We have done it without having to fight. We have done it without a bullet being fired.
